Spam Eating Machine

Posted by Travis Collins at October 19, 2004 8:49 PM

I have added some antivirus and spam detection mechanisms to DreamingWell's mail server. Thanks goes to Atomic Rocket Turtle for his awesome qmail-scanner package. That guy is a genius. The package includes an antivirus package and an antispam filter. Hopefully this should curb the onslaught for my users.

Recently the e-mail server has beaten to a pulp by 'random guess' spam. More than 98% of the e-mail recieved by the server is spam to an address that does not exist. Someone thinks I'm going to die tomorrow and I'll miss out on all the softwares, med.ca.tions and pillz! I have managed to greatly curb the CPU load caused by all of the spam by 'disabling' the bounce back message. All of the spam was sent to non-existant addresses on my server, and came with a spoofed (non-existant) return address. Instead of my server trying to send a bounce back to an address that doesnt exist (was spoofed), I have the server flush the spam and forget it. However, this means that there will be no bounce backs for wrong e-mail addresses at all. But It beats not having e-mail at all.
